The Science of Food: New Online Educational Resources

The Science of Food: New Online Educational Resources

April 04, 2011

Concerned Children’s Advertisers (CCA), in partnership with the Canadian Sugar Institute (CSI) and Egg Farmers of Canada, has developed and launched an interactive education microsite, The Science of Food!

CCA’s objective is to provide information and strategies to help children eat smart, move more and be media wise. The Science of Food supports this objective by incorporating current, scientific information and activities that will help to educate children about food systems, nutrition and health. Resources include lesson plans, interesting but little-known facts and additional classroom activities for educators to share with their students. The concept and content for this module was vetted by a national teacher advisory panel that was coordinated by Paton Publishing on CCA’s behalf.

CSIs’ integrated curriculum resource, Nature’s Sweet Mystery, is also featured on the CCA microsite. Nature’s Sweet Mystery is designed to guide students in grades 4 to 6 in an exploration of food energy through a series of four Missions (Lesson Plans). The lesson plans align with provincial curricula across Canada and include teacher background information, rubrics, glossaries and reproducible student activity sheets. The resource was classroom tested by Canadian teachers and approved by the Ontario Agri-Food Education Inc.
